While the Christmas season is often a time of celebration for those who celebrate,
for many, it can also be a period of difficulty, bringing up painful
memories, financial worry, broken relationships, bereavement and concerns for the
world.
Solace & Solstice is a trauma-informed, compassionate alternative to traditional
festivities—a place where people can simply "be" and feel seen and held without
the pressure to be merry.
Revd. MacNeill Cooper first introduced Longest Night services to the Shropshire
and Marches Circuit at Minsterley Chapel in 2017, where the Service, held on or
around the winter solstice, has since evolved and is still being offered under different
leadership. Revd. MacNeill Cooper’s pastorate moved and so did the Service.
Renamed Solace and Solstice in 2025, this gathering offers a sacred space for those
navigating bereavement, anxiety, illness, or concerns for the world.
“To respect those for whom traditional Christmas symbols can deepen sorrow, we
have intentionally moved away from typical holiday markers. There are no lit trees or carols; instead, the space is filled with gentle music, storytelling, and symbolic acts that invite quiet reflection. These inclusive gatherings are designed for everyone—from those of deep faith to those who identify as ‘spiritual but not religious’,” said Revd. MacNeill Cooper, adding "We ensure a chaplain is available for anyone who needs a supportive conversation."
Following the Service, holiday coping guides are provided. “It is a privilege to a serve a sacred space where no one has to carry the weight of the longest night on their own. This is one of the most meaningful ministries I offer and one I spend a long time crafting, because I have seen the deep impact it can have on so many different people with so many varied reasons for why Christmas is not always joyful.”
We look forward to continuing this tradition of quiet companionship next
on December 19th, 2026, 7:00 PM at Belle Vue Methodist Church.
