Blessing of the Pets

Generic dog & cat

Sunday October 3rd, outside Greenfields Church, a small group of humans and animals gathered for a Blessing of the Pets service. There were dogs, a cat, some birds overhead and even some stuffed animals. In a short but treat laden time together, many pets were blessed along with their keepers to give thanks for our animal (stuffed and live) companions in our lives.
We are reminded that God has given us the gift of animal companionship and that we are stewards of all creation- not just with pets but with the wider world- and we are to be mindful of how we walk on the earth.
It was lovely to see that many of the neighbourhood pets already knew each other and that the curious birds of the air were present to observe. We read the scripture where Jesus reminds us that not even King Solomon's robes were dressed as the flowers of the fields and that the birds of the air are taken care of and therefore, we will be too.
