The Shropshire & Marches Methodist Circuit Office wil be temporarily relocating from The Methodist Centre, Basyton Hill to a former School in the village whilst renovations take place.

The new address will be Oaklands School, Glebe Road, Bayston Hill, Shrewsbury, SY3 0PZ. The telephone number and email address will remain the same.

We will keep you updated on the progress at The Methodist Centre!

Cleobury Church Goes Solar!

Cleobury Methodist Church went solar in December 2011, a plan that was speeded up to fit in with the government’s policy change on Feed in Tariffs. They are the first in the Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury Methodist District to take this initiative. In a fully electric building the benefits of the 20 photo voltaic panels are clear offering energy security against rising costs, this will allow them to provide the recently refurbished hall to community groups at a basic rent for the foreseeable future. The panels were paid for by a combination of loans from church members and a low cost loan from Methodist Chapel Aid, which is hoped will be paid off during the next 4 years through fundraising and the income from exporting surplus electricity. The church members are grateful for the support of Circuit and District as well as local councillors and planning officers in assisting them in responding to the changed government deadlines and therefore making the project viable.

Preparations are in hand for the 2012 Age UK Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin (previously Age Concern Shropshire T and W!) holiday. The holiday is 14th to 21st July, with pick-up points for holidaymakers all over the County. The group stay at the Queens Hotel in Llandudno on a Half Board basis, and the holiday is suitable for older folk who might otherwise find it difficult to have a holiday.

If as a holidaymaker you need a carer you are required to find, and bring, your own. The hotel and the volunteers make every effort to support individual needs, for example a bathroom with a shower rather than a bath, a frame around a toilet etc., really the things that you need when you are living at home. Volunteers are available at the hotel during the day, and in an emergency at night, and we all try our very best to ensure everyone has a good time.

If you are interested in coming on the holiday, please ring the Age UK office in Shrewsbury on 01743 233123 and ask to be sent an application form. All requested application forms are sent out at the same time in early March and it is strongly advised that you complete and return the form by return of post if possible. There are only 11 single rooms in the hotel and these are always filled very quickly. We hope to see you in Llandudno!

Cafe Church, a new ecumencial venture in Shrewsbury town centre, will be meeting on the following date: 25th April. We meet at 7.30pm – 8.30 pm in the Shrewsbury Coffee House, Castle Gates, Shrewsbury (near the Station).

Cafe Church aims to provide for those seeking a more spiritual element in their lives an informal opportunity to explore Christianity.

Family Story Cafe – Tenbury Wells

Once a month on the 3rd Sunday 3-5pm the Methodist Hall at Tenbury becomes the Family Story Cafe. It does what it says on the tin – a space for families, a story time, all with coffee and cake.

It is a joint project by the Methodists and St Mary’s, the parish church using skills from both congregations .

You can relax with a drink and chat, or get involved in the activities provided – no age limits on the creative tables! The story time presents Bible stories in an interactive way using Godly Play material which we loan from the Diocesan Resource Centre in Ludlow.

The vision was for the churches to support families in the area offering a low cost but stimulating environment for adults and children alike. We don’t charge but invite donations to cover expenses, which are fairly low with lovely homemade cakes donated by church members.

Although it is still very new (starting July 2011) we are getting to know new families. If anyone wants to find out more contact Rev Helen Roberts helen_goolwa@ hotmail.com or via the circuit office.

Community Cafe Church in Shrewsbury

A new ecumencial venture in Shrewsbury town centre, the Cafe Church, has now moved to The Shrewsbury Coffee House, Castle Gates, Shrewsbury (near the Station).

The Cafe Church meets on 4th Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm and aims to provide those seeking a more spiritual element in their lives and an informal opportunity to explore Christianity.

If this could be you, why not come along for coffee and a chat in a friendly relaxed setting?

The next meeting is on Wednesday 24th November from 7.30pm - 8.30pm

Choir visit a great success

Two members of Wem Methodist Church – Alwyn Thomas and Sue Holland, who will be celebrating “special” birthdays next month – decided to mark these milestones, as well as raise funds for the church, by organising a Concert by the Shrewsbury-based Choir Of One Accord, of which Sue is a member.

The Concert took place at the church on Saturday, 12th February when a large audience enjoyed a packed programme of 25 items covering a wide variety of musical styles, introduced with much humour by the Choir’s Musical Director, Alison Stevens. The Accompanist was Ann Taylor.

Tasty refreshments were served in the interval and the event raised £700 for church funds.

Edwardian Christmas Fayre a great success
